Michael Critch, NSB Energy CEO presents on History of exploration drilling in NL

The 32nd annual NOIA Conference was held this past week at the Newly expanded St. John’s Convention Centre. Participants from around the world converged to discuss issues pertinent to the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Oil and Gas industry. The theme of 2016’s conference was “Fueling the Future & Re-energizing Change”. The three-day conference delivered a robust program, featuring insights from leading industry stakeholders and experts. Session topics included: Global Outlook, Global Response, Lessons Learned, Opportunities Jeanne d’Arc Basin, Technology & Innovation and finally Future of Exploration. 

NSB Energy Consulting was recently awarded a contract from Nalcor Oil & Gas to conduct a comprehensive review of wells drilled offshore Newfoundland & Labrador (NL). Detailed information on wells drilled offshore NL were compiled and analyzed. As Part of the sixth session, Michael Critch, President and CEO of NSB Energy presented a summary of this report. 

Mr. Critch’s presentation focused on the history of exploration Wells drilled offshore, and the rigs used. Beginning with an overview of the history of offshore exploration, including the first well drilled, the first deepwater well drilled, and an overview of drilling performance throughout the last 50 years. 

The drilling performance overview provided delegates with a comparative analysis by offshore region, including South, East, Jeanne d’Arc and Labrador areas in NL highlighting some key trends seen, in depth versus performance, average rate of penetration and total time on well. In addition, a complete overview of the 42 rigs used offshore NL was reviewed along with the regulatory requirements of getting an offshore rig approved for NL waters.

 Nalcor Oil and Gas will be publishing the final report along with all the information gathered on individuals wells online via its Nalcor Exploration Strategy System (NESS database.
