In March 2016, NSB Energy was selected by Nalcor Energy – Oil & Gas to prepare an historical review of drilling performance report for exploration drilling offshore Newfoundland and Labrador. The report, created and authored by the staff of NSB Energy, has been released through the Nalcor Exploration Strategy System (NESS system). This report provides a summary of well data and drilling metrics obtained for a large contingent of exploration wells that have been drilled offshore Newfoundland and Labrador since 1966.
Per Nalcor Energy – Oil & Gas:
The study is a comprehensive compilation of data from publicly available reports on exploration wells drilled in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore. Its footprint covers the most northerly points of offshore Labrador, to the waters comprising the southern extents of the province’s jurisdiction. This vast area has been divided into four separate regions for ease of analysis and comparison purposes: Labrador (with Labrador North and Labrador South sub-regions), Eastern Newfoundland, Jeanne d’Arc Basin, and South Newfoundland. The individual reporting provides analysis of 112 exploration wells drilled in the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore. Through drilling performance indicators such as rate of penetration (ROP), water depth, total drilled depth, drilling fluid type and amount of non-productive time (NPT), this study provides the ability to compare drilling metrics of individual wells in a particular region, but also compare the separate regions themselves. This report also provides a review of the drilling rigs that have been used in Newfoundland and Labrador’s offshore, research on a number of drilling rigs currently available, and an analysis on how each rig type could perform.
The full report is now available through Nalcor Energy – Oil & Gas’s website. And it’s accompanying analysis can also be found within the NESS systems. This report will now complement additional reports on subjects such as Biostratigraphy, Metocean Study, Pore Pressure Analysis and Rock Physics as part of a concerted effort to address key risks and scientific uncertainties that may hold back new industry investment. NSB Energy is proud to be a key contributor to this strategy and the future development of the Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Industry.
